Bakelite sheets are also commonly known as Hylam sheets, Tufnol sheets,
Norplex sheets, Micarta sheets, phenolic laminate sheets, SRBP
(Synthetic Resin Bonded Paper Base) sheets, and SRBF (Synthetic Resin
Bonded Fabric Base) sheets. All these names refer to the same family of phenolic resin based industrial laminates, widely used for electrical insulation and mechanical applications.
Bakelite sheets are hard, dense materials manufactured by applying heat and pressure to layers of cellulose paper or fabric cloth impregnated with phenolic resin. During this process, polymerization takes place, converting the layered structure into a thermosetting laminate. Once cured, the material becomes rigid, heat resistant, electrically insulating, and mechanically strong.
Unlike thermoplastics, Bakelite sheets do not soften when reheated. They
retain their shape, strength, and insulating properties under continuous
electrical and thermal stress, making them suitable for demanding
industrial environments.
